to his credit he was honorable and took 100% responsibility for all the alleged transgressions (alumni going crazy) of which many - - and I mean many - - were out of his control.  He and Gator Nation so craved finally breaking the Wait til Next Year curse and winning an SEC championship.  That craving fed the monster.

It is easy to blame Charley for the 80's probation but IMO it was a massive lack of institutional control on UF's part.  Gator Clubs had just emerged and the masses were like rabid dogs marching to the Give Em Hell Pell drum beat.  I was very involved in recruiting in the early 80's and have many stories back then.  I broke a couple of NCAA rules (bought a recruit an OJ and Danish at the Eustis, FL McDonald's and drove same recruit to a practice in Gainesville).  I had no idea either was illegal but that was minor stuff compared to other things I observed and heard about. 

I appreciate what Charley Pell did for UF, even with all the bad.  Many of you will remember that young Jeremy Foley was part of the athletic administration back then and he no doubt learned plenty about the magnitude of 'lack of institutional control'.  UF has been a shining example of running a clean BIG TIME athletic program since the Pell era.  Lessons learned all around.

Lastly, Merry Christmas to Ward and Carrick Pell - - they have remained faithful to everything UF all these years.
