I also want to win the lottery.
For me, a lot of other losses felt worse: Nebraska, FSU 94, FSU 02, UT 98, UT 01, MSU 2000, Ole Miss 2002, LSU 2002, and the list goes on.
All those losses were humiliating or very humbling. Not this one. This one was just frustrating.
This program is on the way up. Right now, nobody is saying -- not even here -- that our two-deep along the front seven is among the best in the nation. Nobody's saying it's even close. But that's changing. Defense wins championship, and it's obvious that Zook understands this axiom. It's the reason why FSU, Miami, and Nebraska all dominated the way they did.
Zook is still in his network-building phase. He's personally gone to every school in Florida. What other coach in the country can claim that? He has solid relationships with former and current players. Guess what? These guys have a lot of influence. The former players I know all love Zook. Obviously that doesn't mean everything, but if we continue to get the types of players I saw on the field last Saturday, then the future is very, very bright.
Building networks nets dividends, but it takes time.
It takes time to build a team. In terms of deep talent, I think SOS hit pinnacles during 1996 and 2001. All his other teams were good, but they weren't great.
Most national champions seem to have at least one game a year where they're favored to win yet find a way to almost lose. The good teams during the same year always manage to lose one or two of those games.
No amount of conditioning will allow you to go an entire game at full speed. You need a quality player to back you up. Does our front seven have this right now? No.
We have depth at all the skill positions and along the O-line. We have ample talent in the secondary. Our punter and kicker so far have been decent. And while we have some talent on the front seven, it's neither exceptional nor deep.
With regards to Zook's gameday coaching, he's certainly made mistakes. Still, his coaching is along with the quality of our players. We are off to a great start offensively, and our D is definitely playing well. We have some tough games this year, and given both our lack of experience along most fronts and our lack of depth along the front seven, I don't expect to win all of them. But now I have good reason to believe we'll be competitive in all of them.
For all the Zook naysayers out there (and this applies to but a few people on this board) -- please, please continue to voice your displeasure. Please continue to focus on the negative. Please continue to demand instant success so that you can be instantly gratified. Only you matter. You clearly have no idea how hard it is -- i.e., how much time and effort it takes -- to build a network from the ground up. Even more sad is that you don't see the future benefits of doing it. But please keep it up. That way I can laugh all the more hard as you call me a bandwagon Zook fan for sticking behind someone in all kinds of weather. When we're back on top we all know who who will be on the bandwagon yelling and screaming.
