He landed at D-Day +2 and fought all the way through to victory in Germany. He made the rank of Command Sergeant Major and served our nation in uniform for a total of 35 years.

He held American Legion Post 140 in Buckhead together as commander for years. It is thriving now and serving another generation of veterans thanks to those efforts. 

He was a lifelong Georgian and proud southerner. Another favorite social outlet was preserving that heritage as a Civil War historian and reenactor.

He was President of his class at Atlanta Law School before enlisting in the Army. He never fully retired working as a resident fishing expert at Bass Pro Shops right up until the week he passed. In addition to his career as a soldier, he had careers in the banking and automotive businesses.    

He was married to the same woman for 72 years and raised a good and beautiful family. They actually raised a good and beautiful family twice as one of their daughters died young but with children they took in and raised as their own. 

He was Command Sergeant Major Frank Benson who lived life so right. I am extremely proud to have called him a friend. It was a distinct honor and pleasure to hold his wife's hand for several moments tonight, and share a few stories, a few laughs, and maybe a tear, as I paid my final respects. Frank, I will always miss you, and never forget you. You loved this country and defined her greatness. The world is less and heaven is a better place today. Rest easy, until we meet again my friend.
