"The thing you have to consider WRT to religious violence..."

Message Replied To ==========

Yes, but he makes another key point in that response

Islam is the greatest threat from religion now, but has not always been and may not always be. The things that drive that particular distinction are the social and political circumstances of the day-- and as such I'll disagree with Hitchens that Islam is particularly dangerous because of its claims to be the "last" and final revelation from God. I'd argue that they all implicitly make that claim (otherwise perhaps all Christians would be Mormons, for example), and all share that dangerous characteristic.

But Hitchens was particularly brutal toward Islam and in most ways correct, IMO. I miss him dearly.

is that by and large, other religions have evolved and assimilated (to a point) with the secular world.  The Muslims are part of an ancient society that has regressed over the course of time to what we see now.

Think of all the good they have done in math and science in the past, and the great civilizations they spawned.  It began to reverse with the introduction of the ultra-conservative movement and their desire to actually return to living as if it were the middle ages instead of the contemporary world.

I get that Christianity was used as an excuse for a lot of atrocity in the past (Crusades, Inquisitions, etc), and aside from perceived "oppression" by Christians, you probably don't live in fear of the Antioch Baptist Church Sunday School teacher detonating a suicide vest outside your house.

The same goes for Christians who feel "oppressed" too.  If we Christians want people to quit freaking out about us no agreeing with their world views, we need to do the same.  If you want to see real oppression, just look around the world at religious (and otherwise) minorities.  Uighers in China, what is going on in Tibet, Christians in the Middle East, and homosexuals in Russia.

Oppression has become a cheap word here in America, where each side shouts each other down as hysterically as possible for having a different set of beliefs or values...it has really grown tiresome to me.  Our society would be a lot better off if we would just quit worrying about what other people are doing with their lives.  My best friend is agnostic, I don't feel threatened by Teh Gheys getting married (seeing as how we've collectively made a mockery out of marriage, even in the Christian community), and I don't care if they put up a Festivus Pole made out of cheap beer cans next to the Nativity.

Deal with it, Christians.  And you non-believers, get over us wishing you a Merry Christmas...we aren't doing it to be rude or oppressive.  The level of asshurt in the country is astounding at times.
