intelligence agencies and some government officials in a handful of countries.  During the 1990's some of these concerns began to become public, with the general concensus seeming to be that Iran might have a weapon by the turn of the century,  During the time immediately before and for a couple of years following 9-11 is when the "axis of evil" proclamations and general concern was elevated.

Regardless of the actual timeline, it should be clear that Iran has long had a goal of obtaining nuclear weapons, and they are almost certainly closer to that goal today than they were a decade ago.  Further, it is undeniable that Iran has been directly involved, as well as sponsoring, death, terror, and political/social destabilization around the globe for over 30 years ....... and they have publicly called for wiping the State of Israel from the face of the earth.  All of the behind-the-scenes, occasional working with that regime for various purposes does not change the threat, which is real.

Hysteria is not warranted, and neither are knee-jerk reactions.  That said, neither is appeasement, and it seems foolish to enter some "agreement" which effectively does the same.
