We leave for Williamsburg in the morning, assuming I can drive in the forecasted snow and rain. The last week in DC and northern Virginia has been really nice. We toured Arlington, the National Archive, the International Spy Museum, the Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Air & Space Museum. We also walked over to see the Whitehouse and saw a play at Ford's Theater. I took early morning side trips to the Supreme Court, the George Washington Masonic Lodge and Gadby's Tavern in Oldtown Arlington, and tonight, took a four hour moonlight stroll to see the memorials under the lights, including Jefferson, FDR, MLK, Korea, Lincoln and Viet Nam. Loved taking my time, reading all the inscribed quotes, and chatting up an extremely knowledgeable and friendly ranger. A highlight of the trip was getting a private tour of the Speaker of the House's office and seeing the House side of the capital up close and behind the scenes.
It is so true that everyone needs to see the capital once or twice before they die. From getting reacquainted with the true greatness of the founders and their successors to seeing the awestruck tourists of all ages from around the world, it is a poignant reminder of how blessed we are as Americans. If you really stop to think about where we started and how we got to where we are today as you visit all these historic sites, it's truly a breathtaking experience.
