UF Roster 2015- who is right McElwain or Muschamp...

Just some thoughts on Rivals rankings and how the players have in recent times performed at UF in relation to their ranking.

Of course UF is in a transition period with new coaches trying to fit players they did not recruit into their systems.

QB toughest position to recruit.  UF does have two 6.0 rated QBs on the roster in Harris and Grier- you would hope to hit on one of these guys.  Harris played last season and got some results and made some plays with his feet.  Red flag would be his completion pct.  But how do you rate guys in the offense that UF was running last year? Grier did not play and had some back issues, which is a concern. Jacob Guy, a perferred walk-on has made some noise in summer camp which can either be taken as good or bad news for the QB position.  Guy is a former 3 star QB.  Mornhinweg adds depth but his recruiting ranking suggests he will not be a successful QB in the SEC.  No impact QBs remain from 2011, 2012 or 2013- which is a fail.  QBs transferring is the big trend in college ball- it is a sort of like free agency.  After Spring ball UF could add a transfer but I wouldn't guess they land a huge game changer.  Verdict- McElwain is right.

RB/FB- UF does have a 6.0 recruit in Taylor, who has had his ups and downs at UF. His ranking suggests he should be a star.  Scarlett and Cronkite are both 5.8 guys which suggest they could have an impact or they could be rotation backs (Matt Jones and Mack Brown were both 5.8 recruits). I'm not sure where McGriff will end up- he is a 5.8 athlete.  Lane had a big bowl game but 5.7 ranking would put him as a borderline contributor.  I'm not sure who will play full back or if McElwain will even have one.  Verdict- McElwain is right with the deciding point being UF not signing a long term back in 2014 when they needed to sign one.

WR- Robinson had a break out year in 2014 but disappeared in some games.  He should be a star as a former 6.0 recruit.  But Bailey is also a 6.0 guy and has not done much.  Fulwood is a 5.9 recruit and has shown flashes (think Hines as a former player).  Two freshman Calloway and Stephens are 5.8 but what do freshman normally contribute at WR- not much.  There are 5 other guys on the roster but their recruiting ranking doesn't suggest success at 5.7 or lower.  Brandon Powell at 5.8 has moved over to slot rfeceiver and could make an impact here.  Verdict- I'm going to go push because I just don't know what UF receivers can do in a functioning passing offense.  I would guess Robinson, Fulwood and Powell should be a functioning unit in a 3 wide set.  4 wide gets a little dicey and there is little depth.

TE- McGee coming back elevates this group- we think.  Coming off a broken leg should be a concern. UF has bodies here but their recruiting ranking doesn't suggest much of a passing game influence with nobody over 5.7 in rankings.  Again kind of a young group so who knows for sure. Verdict- McElwain is right UF never featured the TE and most recruits stayed away during the Muschamp years.

OL- McElwain is absolutely right.  7 returning OL.  Muschamp tried to deflect criticism here about guys leaving early for the NFL but even 9 would be unacceptable.  Of the 7 guys returning Thurman has a chronic shoulder problem which leaves his career in 2015 in doubt.  He is taking 8 months off to try and come back.  UF might have found something in R. Johnson but he has gone down in Spring ball and he too might have shouder issues. Sharpe at 5.8 is the only returning OL with a recruiting ranking that suggests success. Four guys are rated 5.7 or below.  Ivey should be a star at 6.1 but he will be a freshman.  Tyler Jordan is borderline and the other 4 recruits quite frankly look to be reaches.  UF has not had many lineman rated at 5.5 so there is not much of a track record (Sam Robey, David Young are examples). Will UF have walk-ons playing on the OL? Verdict- McElwain in a landslide.

DL-  UF has some stars or potential stars here, Bullard, Jefferson,Holley and Brantley all project to be stars with rankings between 6.1 and 5.9.  There are 5.8 guys to add depth.  Cox has broken through as a 5.7 guy and we are waiting on McCalister to break through.  There are another 6 guys who are rated fairly low and suggest reaches were made.  Maybe some of these guys end up on the OL.  Overall a good amount of players.  Verdict- Muschamp is right UF should be able to field a two deep here and rotate in fresh guys.

LB- Big unknown is the health of Morrison.  If he can't go in 2015 than the picture is much more cloudy.  I would add Rolin here too who has also never been able to stay healthy.  Anzalone should be a star with a ranking of 6.1 and McMillian is not far behind. Powell and Davis have seemed to be sold contributors. Verdict- I'm going push- in Muschamp's mind his depth is fine at LB if Morrison is a go.  UF was in 5 db sets a majority of the time and Muschamp is more concerned with stopping spread teams. Most teams now think they need an uber athlete at inside LB who can match up with a rb in a one back set- a guy big enough to play inside but also get to the boundary.  A healthy Anzalone probably fits that mold. Not getting anyone in 2014 is the major negative here. McElwain/Collins probably think they are right too since they might have different ideas about the lb position. I'm guessing here that Collins wants to bring some pressure from the lb position and that was never a major component with Muscahmp.

DB- Hargreaves, Tabor, Harris, Neal, Mayne and Poole should all be college stars. Add Dawson, Jackson and Wilson and UF has great depth.  Verdict- Muschamp is right.

Overall- McElwain is right.  It is just too hard to get past the problems at OL which could torpedo the entire offense.  Muschamp only thought about defense so his blindness here is to be expected. Also you can just point out the 7 or so under the scholarship max and the 3 star recruits that filled out the 2015 class and it is obvious the roster needs work.  ESPN ranked the position groups in the SEC recently and UF did not do very well at most positions.
