Message Replied To ========== My brother's funeral was held yesterday It was a very stirring service, followed by full military honors. The church was overflowing with mourners. Most of you didn't know Rex, but anyone who did will tell you he was one of the most respected men they ever knew, a distinguished soldier and college counselor who dedicated his life to service. He was also an ardent Gator fan who has been a season ticket holder for nearly 40 years.
Holloway - Rex Lynn Holloway passed away on July 12th, 2015. Rex was born in Pearl, Illinois in 1938, and moved to Palatka, Florida with his family at the age of eight. He graduated from Palatka High School, and then entered the University of Florida, where he was a member of ROTC and Theta Chi Fraternity. Upon graduating in 1961 with a B.A. in Psychology, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the US Army. Rex served his country for twenty-six years. He was an army aviator, completing two tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. His overseas service also included five years in Europe as a battalion commander. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He and his family returned to Palatka, where he served as an academic counselor at St. Johns River Community College for nineteen years. He was a lifelong Gator fan, enjoyed growing roses, working in his yard, and was an expert at fixing anything that was broken. Rex loved living at “Miltondale” and being so close to his children and grandchildren. ============================== The date was 11/1/86...I was on my way to see Florida play Auburn when I stopped in Palatka to pick up some fried chicken at a sadly now long closed down establishment by the name of Chicken Charley's. (Man was it good!) UF came into game 3-4 while Auburn was 7-0 and ranked 3rd in the nation. Anyway, I walked in and not surprisingly, there were other Gator fans inside getting take outs as well. In line in front of me was Rex Holloway. The guy behind the counter jokingly asked Rex, "So just how bad are the Gators gonna lose today?" To Rex however, such was not a joking matter. Rex looked at him dead in the eye and said, "You wanna sell me some chicken today or not? There's plenty of other places that I can buy my tailgate food than here." The guy apologized saying he was only kidding. Rex went ahead and made his purchase there. Rex left and when I went to order I jokingly said to the guy behind the counter, "Don't be asking me what you asked him (Rex) or you'll get the same answer!" Rex was a fine man and fine Gator without question. UF won by the way, 18-17. (Kerwin for 2) |
