having a big time coach was never a crucial part of whatever success they once had. Erickson, Coker, Davis none of the guys were great hires and none of them had much success after Miami. 

The Canes used to get QBs and they used to be able to lockdown southern Florida. They could sell Miami nightlife and NFL aspirations. They had an identity- might not have been a desirable identity, but it was an identity. 

Now I'm not so sure they are anything more than a mediocre team on the treadmill trying to get better and not knowing how. Other football programs have so much money nowadays they can easily step into south FLA and out recruit them. Every team is on television. Miami does not stand out at all anymore.  No facilities, no stadium, and the tradition they had is slipping away. Ten years or more is a long time to be away. Short of lucking into a transformative leader a new coach won't mean that much. 

And let's face it cheating was a big part of their success. They can talk about the U all they want but it's really been cycles of flaunting NCAA rules followed by probation and dead periods. They bottomed out a 5-7 once and may be hitting that record again.

Kind of like Nebraska and roids, you can keep chasing the past but the outlaw days probably aren't coming back anytime soon- no matter how much they want it to be like the good old days.
