how Zook and Zaun went about it. He ran a draw on 1st and 10 from the 20, with 52 seconds left. Good call. He gets 7 yards, so he calls timeout. I have no problem with that. Ingle comes over to the sideline to discuss the situation with the coaches. At that point, Zaun and Zook need to clarify the situation with the young QB. Tell him to look downfield. If nothing is there then EAT THE FREAKIN' BALL!!!! WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T STOP THE CLOCK!!! Unless you hit a pass downfield, past the first down marker. Instead, he rolls to the SHORT side of the field and then inexplicably throws out of bounds!!! The worst and most useless and illogical call that could possibly have been made in that situation, as I told my wife at the time. And I told her at the time that calls like that could cost us the game. And sure enough, it did.
If you are going to take risks, then manage your risks. Remember how Spurrier hated first down intereceptions? Why? Because that was poor game management. If you throw a long interception on first down, then you have wasted the opportunity of the next two downs. If you throw a long INT on third down, it is the equivalent of a punt. That is logical and well thought out game management, appropriate to his style of football.
Zook is not level headed enough to make good gameday decisions. He can recruit, he can get the kids fired up. He has dramatically improved special teams. But HEAD coaches must make good gameday decisions, otherwise they put their team in a bad position. And to me, that is the responsibility of the coaches: to put you players in POSITION to win. The players may not make the play, but good coaches put their players in position to win. Zook did not do that on Saturday, and he failed in that regard many times last year. A sign of his inexperience, but also a sign of his personality. Because he goes off half-cocked all the time. That is his nature. But that is not the nature of a good head coach...
Mud is right, this thing has been beaten to death. Hopefully, we'll improve as a team as the year goes on. But if Zook can't stop making stupid gameday decisions, then he either needs to delegate that authority or be removed from the job. It is a crime for these kids to play their butts off, only to have poor coaching decisions doom their efforts.
