"I am breaking my anti-Lounge rule a bit for this. "

Message Replied To ==========

Bill Nye spoke here last night

Good turnout (had to be several thousand) and a good talk. My eyes glaze over a bit when he starts talking about "deniers" but I think what he does has tremendous value. I always get pretty fired up when the talk turns to space exploration.

During the Q&A he got Neil deGrasse-Tyson on the phone, and Tyson answered a question from the audience-- which was very cool. He was asked how he'd prove that the Earth is more than 6,000 years old. That was pretty embarrassing but mostly the crowd was good and the questions-- mostly from students-- led to a number of interesting comments from Nye.

There's no real point to this post, I guess, except to say that we need to hear more from the science popularizers like Nye and NdGT and less from the anti-science folks in the US these days.==============================

Science is a great gift from God and the science / religion battle is unfortunate.  (The first Chemistry lab at Cambridge had Psalm 111:2 over the door - Great are the works of the Lord. They are studied by all who delight in them.)   Proper theology has a place for science -- natural revelation and common grace -- and proper science should reciprocate.

Science is a servant and cannot be a master.  It does not answer hard questions -- it only asks/answers "how" and not "why."  It properly operates from the epistemology of empiricism and so the phrase "I love you" does not have meaning as the essence of what it means to love someone falls outside of empirical verification.  (We can love someone who is far away and can love someone even though we are temporarily cross w/ one another.)

XNs are upset when some science people say in effect "there is no God because we now see that science is ultimate reality."  So some XNs over react and become anti-science and the food fight is on.

The rise of science came at a time when people believed in a universe that had order, purpose and was worth studying because God had made things.

Newton -- for all his strange views -- was a Christian and operated out of a world view that was supported by the Bible.   So was Paschal and a few others.  Atheist scientists serve God -- though not on purpose --  and are able to do their work because they operate by principles that God has put in place to establish order in the universe.  Chemistry experiments done in 1650 and are repeated in 2015 yield the same results because the universe is made by God.

Religion went astray when men sought to control science by imposing a false ideology -- dating of the earth from bible geneology or an earth centric universe -- for political purposes.  Science wanders from proper moorings when some fail to hold their knowledge with proper humility.  ( Nye is a gifted person but he sticks his finger in people's eye just for fun sometimes and this is not necessary.  )

I will now resume my not poasting in the Lounge policy and mind my own business.
