"The state of the football program"

The state of the football program

What's more interesting than the Grier drama of late is the fan drama about the Grier drama. What an interesting juxtaposition (RE: immaturity). I will make no real commentary, except that it reminds me of school boys sifting through vitreous gravel at the playground, then arguing over whose quartz is covered with the prettiest dog sh**.

I do not mean to imply the subject matter is not worthy of discussion. It is. Whatever stakes there are though appear to be wholly irrelevant to those participating. So far, some of these concerns amount to: "can someone please pat me on the back for things I said weeks ago?", "can someone please pat me on the back for not saying the things you are saying?", "can someone please pat me on the back for being like really super informed on this.?"

That makes this topic an unfortunate transition from the last; I believe all Gators want McElwain to succeed and not just for our personal gains, but in this maybe-weird anthropological impulse for people to initiate other people into their tribes. We ache for him to accept us, the way we thatch our huts, the way we sharpen our arrows, our dances, the way the tits droop on our womens.

McElwain loves good quarterbacking and in the social trade of shiny beads, churned milks, woven blankets and pointy sticks, he did not collect a quarterback from the sack we gave him. And I think many of us feel bad about it, generating a great deal of insecurity and anxiety from those of us who want him to succeed with his strengths as a coach; probably makes a lot of guys on here defensive, like our decorative knits are not completely covering our genitals and the stench is overwhelming the fragrance from the peace pipe. Makes you want to grab a pillow and cover yourself up, but we are out of pillows and he's probably thinking our village is third-rate. Our warriors are so bad we cannot apparently steal wool from the tribe down river, but I digress.

Florida's offense will pretty much lack the only weapon he likes going to war with - a good quarterback. Like most teams from year-one to year-two of coaching changes, the Gators will get a boost in cohesion and output; an improved offensive line with a rock at blindside OT with Martez Ivey, a fleet of perhaps the best WRs we have had since 2008 (I am counting Nate Craig Myers this February to help Antonio Callaway) , a prototypical bruiser RB with 6'2" 240 lbs JUCO running back Mark Thompson, but a severe liability at QB.

...so much so that it makes you want to grab your pillows and cover your nuts, but I digress.

Next year's chemistry will be entirely different from this past season. The team will have the same coaches for 2 years and light bulbs will be turning on. Year two is always the year coaches look like great hires even when they're not (Mushpoop, Sumlin, Saban, Meyer, Freeze, etc). We will have 30+ new players on this team next year and I strongly feel more than half of them will be full-time contributors. And these guys will be guys this staff has targeted for more than a year to work in their systems.

How will they all mesh together? That's the thing. I am not convinced that this team will not win another 10 games next year, but then again, it's certainly possibly all this youth, chaos and uncertainly will start to accumulate and next year will look more like a transition year.

Still, I think our defense out-performed expectations this year, given the personnel and that all these players were adjusting to a brand new system. Oddly enough, I felt our strength was going to be in the secondary, but it turned out Randy Shannon and Chris Rumph had his players outshine our preseason all-americans. Can Geoff Collins and company reproduce the same magic next year? I am actually leaning towards "yes".

Calab Brantley, CeCe Jefferson, Bryan Cox Jr, Jordan Sherit, Jarrod Davis, Alex Anzalone, Jalen Tabor and maybe a couple surprises coming back? That's a good list of talent. Add to that special teams guys like Powell and Pineiro at Kicker? I mean, holy sh** finally a kicker?!!

What I am saying is, it's not all doom-and-gloom, but by all means continue to argue about how the Grier drama made you a better human being than the rest of us. *disarming smiley face*
