the state of Florida (when you remove IMG Academy, the Gators signed 4 of the top 18 players in the state but that wouldn't fit the conclusion). Second, cherry picking the 247Sports rating instead of say Rivals where Florida would look a lot better compared to FSU, UGA, and LSU. 

Even is you are predisposed to believe UF has a blue chip problem, this is the easy story to write- one metric on a spreadsheet about 2 classes of players who either have hardly played or never played a down of college football.

The better story is why did UF offer these players in the first place? What are the Gator coaches evaluating that is not showing up in the star system? This class for UF was pretty much in place months ago. For whatever reason Mac went in this direction for players he wanted. Why did he offer these guys early in the process and largely hold this class together? 

The rating services exist to entertain fans, I don't believe any coaching staff use the services' opinions over their own evaluations.  I think the services do a good job of identifying players. But it is just film evaluations,and some camps- they can not know the players as people. If a kid is solid to UF for months and doesn't pile up offers from other schools they will never get stars added to their profile. 

Also we need to keep in mind that three star players are not average or mediocre players- they are already in the top half of all players that will ever play college football.  On Rivals there were only 387 4 and 5 star players in the class of 2016. The odds a high school senior will be even a 3 star recruit are 0.6 percent.
