You jumping in on one side and allowing personal insults to stand from the other creates the problem.

They are vindicated and will come back in full force and with more angst.

I don't read every post.  I don't even think I have looked at this board since signing day or thereabouts.  I am 55 years old with a job and a life.  I have been doing this message board thing for 20 years.  If it ceased to exist, I would miss the interaction with some of the people and the comfort this site provides as a community, but my life would go on.  I sometimes err on the side of trusting middle aged and older people to act accordingly and to understand there will be conflict and disagreements.

This dissension on this board seems to bother you in a different way than it does others.  Many seem to have the ability to ignore others, or to respond with jokes rather than with angst.

As for me...I am admittedly more of a half full kind of sports fan, and I do see threads with starters like the Lava thread you referenced below to be silly (and in his case, I see it as trolling based on a humongous body of work...too large and consistent to be ignored).

Bottom line is no one really wants to babysit this crap.  So point all the fingers you wish at me and well-intentioned admins.  It is what it is, and the board will be what it will be.  Sorry you find it so intolerable.
