....as to be slackjaw astonished that large portions of the populace who DON'T want to be told what to do by massive governmental bureacracies that really don't give two shakes about them and never will. And that those people are willing to take a temporary economic hit or put up with some level of uncertainty about their future to do something about it.

That seems to me to be the very basis of what the US was once all about but is now seen as solely the domain of "angry old white people".
