was Dr. Steve DeKoskey the Director of UF's Brain Institute at the Orange and Blue Plate luncheon here in clowntown today. Here is a one word summary of his talk...Spectactular! Steve as you probably know is featured in the movie CONCUSSION and told great tales from the movie and the differences between the real thing and the movie. One cool thing was that in real life DR. Omalu ( Will Smith in the movie) actually did just walk into his office one day with a 5 gallon bucket that had Mike Webster's brain in it.... Other take aways that my little pea brain caught.... Lacross has more head injuries at UF sports than football... don't get concussed as you get older as the research shows bigger problems... knock outs have higher relationships to later problems... he thinks younger begets better chance for complete healing as studies link more of the problems more to older players... he is not of the school of banning football as others have tried as he doesn't think that is a reality but more of the process of preventing and curing... Jon Moyle, a former UF player and atty here asked him if a parent should let the kid play football and I think his answer knocked it out of the park as he said it is something that should be of a significant full family discussion involving, kid, parents and family to try to digest the feelings of all involved and noting that many kids and their families see football as a way out and that carries significant weight....many boxers and players don't seem to get chronic traumatic encephalopathy and the quest is to figure out why and use that for cure, treatment etc... also as you get older stay away from benedryl, Diphenhydramine, and other antihystimines if you can as they tend to be problematic on our brains more as we age... he was brilliant, entertaining, suprisingly pragmatic and engaging, down to earth with a rational ego for a guy of his stature.
