"Agree on the game plan part"

Message Replied To ==========

Was the game plan too conservative to protect Appleby?...

I'm not sure on this and only asking opinions. I think Appleby functioned ok in the game. He hit on three one on one throws down the sideline. He made a nice throw on the first TD. Safe throws that won't get picked and are easy reads or more likely his only read.  UF screened a lot and threw to the TE in the flat- again safe throws. Goolsby 5, and Cronkrite 5 catches, Lewis 2 (plus drops).Scarlett 1.

UF did not attack the middle of the field and only once threw sideways. Teams did what Tenn did eventually on defense (stacked the box and run blitz the a gaps). With LDR UF bubble screened them to death and threw to slot receivers, he seemed to have a progression of receivers to work through.UF could at least try to spread the field sideways and make you pay if you got to aggressive.  Again the competition was a step up but UF  seemed once again to be game planning their QB out of the game. It was an offense Treon would have been comfortable running if you know....he could actually throw from the pocket. It seemed like a lack of imagination. This is not a slam on Appleby who I think did what was asked of him and played well, 23/39 296 3 TD 1 int, 24 yds rushing. QBR was only 53.1,which was the 45th best number this week (9th best in the SEC).

Again not comparing Appleby to Treon only the game plan for the QB and the scaled back offence. Vandy now has film and they will be stupid if they don't put 8 in the box, put a safety over the top on Callaway's side and bring pressure. Different back up QB but the same game plan.

==============================

UF coaches did virtually nothing to counter what UT was doing defensively.  Partly because OL was dominated in 2nd half after a strong first half.  Field position was also a big factor (special teams total fail)

Appleby is vastly superior to Treon.  He can makes throws Treon can only dream of making.  I thought he played a good game and while a bit off in 2nd half, AA was held back by a very leaky OL, poor play calling and horrid field position.

When UF failed to convert early in 2nd H on 3rd and 8 inches, that was the beginning.  UT scored on next possession and we all knew the knife fight was on.  UT proceeded to cut us up.

Bigger issue for me is why the vaunted Gator defense couldn't manage more than one stop when the game was still in doubt in the 2nd H.  The blown coverages by the secondary was reminiscent of the debacle in Tuscaloosa in 2014.  Just terrible.   The utter and total collapse of special teams in 2nd half should be discussed  too.  What the H happened to Callaway on those PRs?  Hard for an intelligent football fan to comprehend.

 Appleby was the least of these issues IMO.
