"I've likely posted this before, but prior to the Marlins being born I was a Cubs fan" |
|
I grew up in Miami, but my father was from Chicago and grew up going to Cubs games with his father and uncles until he moved to Miami in the 1950s. My first regular season MLB game was in 1987 at Wrigley Field (before the lights). The Cubs played the Astros and Andre Dawson hit a home run. It was a memory that I'll never forget to say the least. In fact, at my Bar Mitzvah, the theme of the party was Chicago Cubs. The Marlins were born while I was still young enough to develop a love and passion for my hometown team, the Cubs of course have always remained special to me, particularly for my dad. My dad has gotten less passionate about sports over the years, caring less when the Dolphins lose, but his Cubs have always mattered to him. 2003 was an interesting post-season for both of us, as I preferred the Marlins not play the Cubs due it pitting my hometown team and my original favorite team via my dad (plus I figured the Marlins would lose), but ultimately they played and it worked out for the Marlins. I felt bad for my dad then and hoped it would happen at some point soon for him. It obviously didn't. My dad is 74 years old now. He was 3 the last time the Cubs made the World Series, and his mother wasn't even alive the last time they won one. I cannot think of the last time he stayed awake past midnight while at home, but last night he did, and he finally got to see the Cubs win a World Series. It was fun for me, and certainly rekindled memories of childhood, but so special for my father, and I am so glad he got to enjoy this. One other thing, as for that Bar Mitzvah shirt, it is somewhat of a cult classic in our home. My mom found a lot of them when cleaning out a closet years ago and sent them to us. She was very careful then to not say on the back "I hit a home run" because of the sexual connotations, so she asked the t-shirt guy to come up with something didn't. Kids today would call this an "epic fail" but we love the shirt for this reason. Oh, and interestingly enough, my Bar Mitzvah was on November 2, 1991, exactly 25 years before Game 7 this World Series began.
