"Random post-mortem thoughts"

1. I did not see that coming and I was very wrong.  I am concernced, but I believe that our nation is strong enough to withstand just about anything.

2. Rs may have a demographic problem, but the Ds have got a massive white people problem.  It is not just working class white guys either - HRC massively underperformed in the Philly, Detroit, Pittsburgh, etc. suburbs that we were supposed to be her saving grace.   Maybe this election will cause the Ds to listen to the concerns of white people more closely and allow the Rs to take the time and listen to the concerns of other demographic groups.   I am not very hopeful, but I don't want to be hopeless.

3. The Red/Blue divide has been replaced by a stark divide between rural and suburban v. urban.   The Ds have a narrow majority in the country but they have in large part packed themselves into urban areas which is why they will continue to have trouble regaining the House absent a massive wave election.   Again, maybe this gives the Ds the opportunity to look outside the city limits and gives Rs the chance to hear the concerns of those who live in dense urban areas (beats calling them "hellholes" or the like).

4. 2010 and 2014 completely wiped out the D bench.   The Ds did not run Feingold and Bayh from a position of strength, but rather desperation in trying to capture the Senate.  The fact that the Ds only picked up one seat when the Rs were defending so many vulnerable R seats has to be almost as discouraging for them as the presidential race.

5. Will we see another wave election in 2018?    If Trump cannot control himself or the Rs overreach, it is possible that 2018 looks like 2006, 2010 and 2014.  It is terrible map for the Ds for the Senate, however.   Lots of time between then and now.

6. The Ds cannot blame Comey for the loss.   Sure, if it had come down to just FL and Trump won by a handful of votes, that is a plausible story.   Comey cannot explain PA, WI and potentially MI.

7. Brightside for the Ds is that I think whomever had won this election was likely to be a one-term president for one simple reason - I believe we are due for a recession between now and 2020.   I don't anticipate anything like 2008, but if China falls into a recession, or Europe cannot keep its #badword# together, or the economy slows down for no other reason that is due, we will see a recession in the next four years.   Hopefully, it is the 1992 or 2000 variety of recession (painful, but relatively mild and short-lived).
