It seems like there might have been a moment of crisis after Bama game on the direction the offense is going and what they wanted to do on offense in the future.  Perhaps they have now settled on a path and that is to double down on Nussmeier and the pro-style offense- which I think Mac also favors.  I think they have invested in players that fit this style and they may realize they are running out of time and can't change.

So they want an NFL guy.  Somebody that can teach zone blocking and pass protection.  If this person has college experience and recruiting that would be a bonus but it looks like teaching will be the focus.  I guess that means the next opening on offense (Nord?) will have to go to an ace recruiter.  And if the persuit of Locksley is any indication there is a spot for a guy who can recruit no matter how bad a coach he is or if they have a few issues on their resume.

We harp on the QB play but the o-line is a mess, maybe they go hand in hand.  Teams start games against UF in a cover-2 (two deep safties).  This shows no respect for UF's running game.  Other teams think they can stop UF running with 6 guys in the box. UF has no running QB so it is usually a numbers game 6 on 6 and UF almost always loses unless Scarlett breaks a tackle or somehow gets outside. Being unable to run the ball kills the pro-style system UF wants to go with.  They can't run inside and they can't set up the play action- which is negated somewhat anyway by the cover 2. Another big emphasis is the vertical passing game which again UF can't get into because the line can't figure out pass protection (QB and RB also have a role here). Del Rio was good at reads but didn't have the arm, Appleby was terrible at reads but had an ok arm.  Teams would send two blitzers at Scarlett as an overload blitz and he was confused almost everytime on who to take. TEs were not great either on arc blocks.

Mac said they have to refocus on line of scrimmage and he is right.

QB, I don't know where they go.  All the scrambling for a QB either through transfer or as a late recruiting flip is worrisome.  Franks would seem to have the tools to thrive in this system especially the big arm but he has to make reads- figure out coverage and then go through progressions. There has always been questions about accuracy.  Franks would help the run game some because teams would at least have to respect the possibility he could run- the OL could block 5 and Franks could read the 6th which in theory would give Scarlett more of a chance.  Teams might have to walk a safety up to the LOS for a change. Trask I just don't know enough about what he can do. Del Rio can't make it work- not athletic enough and not a good enough arm (even pre-injury).

UF has pieces on offense but they have got to commit to an identity on offense.  They have got to get players that fit the pro-style- downhill running, play action, vertical passing (I should add using the TE).  It doesn't help to make a splash in hiring or recruiting if guys don't fit what you want to do. Fit matters just as much as recruiting stars matter.
