There is no evidence that liberals are alienating people in the center. Trump's approval ratings among Independents is terrible.

Pretty much, the premise is similar to those use by spousal abusers: "If she wouldn't talk back and be so difficult, I would not be hitting her".

Trump's supporters are never voting for Ds, but they never have and never will. The answer is in the middle and those that didn't bother to vote.

The far left is indeed pushing would-be allies away and there we have it.  A Middle with no allegiance to a party and maybe, just maybe, Sasse, McCaskill and other center politicians on both sides can recognize and and harness it.
