My question, if you removed government out of the equasion, would this really change?

It seems to me the hospitals and corporation would just get worse. As long as they are driven by expanding profits, and they will always be, I just dont see a real change. I like the idea of all procedures costs being made public so we have a real choice. Recently my wife had carpel tunnel surgury and we had to call multiple times trying to get a itemized bill for her insurance company. We never received an actual itemized cost list. 

They operate on a cash basis. They don't take insurance of any kind. You want their services, you pay directly for them. As such, they have to list prices. Just like every other business outside of healthcare. Unsurprisingly, their prices are about 80% lower than what a typical hospital would charge. 80% lower.

But the huge percentage of healthcare operates in a government-mandated monopoly. Price-fixing, antitrust laws, etc. are not enforced. Hospitals don't have to list prices. And they can charge whatever they want. They routinely overcharge by 150% or more in anticipation of only getting 40% reimbursed by insurance companies. (Too bad for the uninsured. They're on the hook for the entire overcharged amount.)

No company in any other industry is allowed to operate like this. Yet it's routine, i.e. business as usual, for the healthcare industry.
