we lost a treasure in the passing today of Dr. Michael Gannon. Father Gannon, Professor Gannon or as I came to know him, Mike, was the greatest historian of Florida I have known. The tributes will be large and well deserved. What an incredible man who lived a vibrant great and inspiring life.
Gannon, Michael UF Historian, Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of History; 36-year teaching career at UF; awarded the first Florida Literary Lifetime Achievement Award by Governor Crist. In 2007 Michael Gannon was awarded the highest decoration of the City of St. Augustine, the Order of La Florida. He served on the board for UF Historic St Augustine among others. He holds graduate degrees from Catholic University in Washington, D.C., the Universite de Louvain in Belgium, and the University of Florida. |
