- The key play in the game was actually Justine McLean's bunt base hit to lead off the 7th. As pure softball fundamental skill goes, hers was one of the finest plays you will ever see on a softball diamond. A running, "one-handed" drag bunt down the 3rd base line from a speedy left-handed hitter. She was out of the box and four steps down the line before an FSU fielder could even react to it. Maybe Ichiro is the only player I've ever seen who executed that play as well.

- It was a good thing McLean could lay down a bunt, because prior to the 7th inning I was really displeased with the UF hitter's approaches throughout the game. Batter's were constantly dropping their hands, taking way too many pitches, forcing two strike counts, and taking shortened defensive swings causing pop ups. How many of our innings ended with a fly ball with runners on base? Besides Kvistad and Lorenz, Florida doesn't have a lot of pure power in the lineup like previous seasons. This team has a bunch of speedy, gap hitters. They have to do a better job of putting the ball on the ground and using their speed to put pressure on the defense. Case in point: UF finally hit a hard grounder to short, our runner coming from first masked the second baseman, sow's second sacker tried to rush the play and bobbled it for an error. This has to be our offensive M.O. going forward... even with great pitching, waiting around to the 7th inning to get the clutch hit won't work come tournament time. It takes two players to make an out on a grounder, only one from a fly ball.

- Coach Walton out coached sow's coach dealing with the pitching changes... Walton brought Barnhill in at an inning change. Nobody on base, no pressure. Barnhill can take her warm up tosses and settle right in. The squaws coach changed pitcher's mid inning and brought her reliever in with way too much pressure on her. Yes, a lefty pitcher was brought in to face four straight Gator lefty hitters, but with two runners on base, the reliever had to be too careful. She centered up a fastball to Kvistad, game winning base hit.

- Last play of the game, the sow's weren't coached up properly. Winning run is on second with two outs. Base hit to right field, right fielder throws home to cut off the run, but first baseman is in the middle of the infield and cuts off the throw?? Why is she cutting it off? Now McClean is so fast she would have likely scored anyway, but you have to give the catcher a chance to make the out at home. And truthfully, sow's best option would have been for the right fielder to charge hard on the hard liner, first baseman to stay home and try to get the slower running Kvistad at first. Shorter throw to first, force play at first, run at home doesn't score, go to extra innings.

- In fast pitch softball, besides a powerful pitcher, the most important player on the field is the catcher. Defensively they can be responsible for keeping the most runs off the board. Florida's catcher Janell Wheaton allowed no pass balls and cut down two potential sow base stealers at second and kept them out of scoring position. Sow's catcher had two deplorably blocked pass balls and allowed Gator runners to advance into scoring position twice. It's the little things that help you win tight 1-0 games against your rivals.
