Message Replied To ========== Florida lawmakers are deciding on whether to remove so called "whiskey wall" Posting this here (not in the Lounge) because I don't see it as a political topic....more of a social issue IMO. This is about whether grocery chains can sell hard liquor on their shelves (and not have to have a separate entrance and a separate space). While I am a fan of liquor, not sure I am a fan of this move as I see it as being a killer of yet another retail shopping center category. Lots of independants who are in shopping centers with existing Publix or Target stores will likely get killed (or blocked as a restriction in new centers). I've read Publix isn't necessarily a fan of this move either (surprisingly) as they see it making liquor too accessible to minors (and other crab leg type opportunists). Knowing that my opinion is based mostly on my being in the shopping center industry, I'm just a little curious as to what others think. I assume most like the move simply because of convenience? ==============================grocery stores sell other age restricted products like Beer and Wine and Tobacco so what's so sacrosanct about liquor? Not having to have a separate store....or in this case use the dodge of having a wall and a separate entrance will lower costs and the savings will get passed on to customers. Its more efficient. Yes, some mom and pop type liquor stores will get beaten out on price due to grocery stores being able to compete evenly. Sorry for them, but that's the free market. Consumers will benefit. |
