A front-page article in today's South Bend Tribune describes this plan. The student leader of the movement claims there will be 50-100 students staging a silent protest by getting up and walking out of the graduation ceremony when Mike Pence (former Indiana Governor) begins his commencement address.

This really pisses me off. And I am not a fan of Trump or Pence. But I'm not afraid to hear what either of them have to say. I've worked at ND for 27 years, about to start number 28. It is a University, presumably a place where we can debate ideas and differences of opinion. But not for these millennial wusses apparently. People in the 60s and 70s fought to keep the man from holding them down and silencing their voices. Today's students fight to be protected from hearing about things with which they may disagree. This is snowflake behavior to the extreme, and I for one am embarrassed that they feel this is appropriate. Perhaps an educated response would be to listen to what he has to say and then have interesting conversations at dinner with your family about it and express why you feel he is misguided? Being afraid to listen is for the intellectually weak.

I would have no problem listening to anybody speak no matter how much I may disagree with their politics. Pre-death Bin Laden? Sure, let's hear his side. Hitler? Bring it on, I want to know why he did that sh*t.

I am embarrassed for a great university. I think we have failed these young men and women if they feel that it is better to walk out and showboat rather than to respectfully listen to someone your university has invited to speak on your special day.
