That was the excuse given by those who proposed it but it was placed in the "meaningful use" "quality" metrics data (now called either MIPPS or MACRA depending on which program the doc is assigned to under the ACA).

The measure would have mandated that gun ownership be documented on a spreadsheet and reported to the federal government. None of the nuance (such as storage as gatordome said etc) was included. Although it may not have been the intent of HHS, this would have created a database list of who owned guns in the US.

A discussion of responsible gun ownership IS important in many medical situations, but the actual program HHS was setting up did not accomplish that. The Florida legislature law forbid it.

Both parties suck.
