The leave Singer in/pull Singer discussion last night here and on twitter was the latest example of something that always mystifies me - why do fans think they know more than coaches? 

 Certainly, there are some decisions coaches make that are mistakes. They get stuff wrong, and we as fans lament (or celebrate) those decisions. That's part of being a fan.

But why do we feel that our opinions are more informed, or based on more logic, or are formulated with more expertise than the person actually getting paid to do that job?

We sit on a couch or in the stands and we see Singer tiring. We have that one bit of information to feed our opinions. But how many of us talk to Brady Singer on a daily basis and watch him pitch in practice when he's fatigued? How many of us got input from the catcher or the assistant coaches on what's going on out on the field? Who other than Sully has coached the kid for a few years and knows what he's apt to do in this situation? Or, who knew the tendencies of the guys warming up in the pen against this particular batter? What situation the lineup would be in if he made a change right there? What the double switching prospects were then vs. if he got out of the inning? 

My point isn't that we should have blind faith in coaching. My point is that as fans, we have a fraction of the information available to us that the coaches have to make decisions. Sometimes, they still get it wrong, but why would we think we're better equipped to make decisions than coaches?
