I don't post much about Gator baseball, but was one of two unpaid assistant equipment managers for the team in 1972 and 1973. Since I was only in junior high school, I guess some would say we were glorified bat boys. Nonetheless, I cut my teeth in the UF dugout with Coach Dave Fuller and P.A. Lee. We had some good pitchers--Doug Corbett, who made it to the bigs, and Iron Mike Newman--but otherwise things were pretty pedestrian.
Like Gator basketball back then, we enjoyed watching games in large measure because we got to see real stars on rival teams in-person. Now, we have the stars in both sports and finally have a championship in baseball. Godspeed to all those forgotten Gators who toiled at Perry Field over the years. I remember some of you quite well and am sure you took special delight watching the dogpile on pitcher's mound last night.
