"Those who argue/advocate "dropping" any sport have ZERO CLUE about UF and Athletics"in response to 100% correct, posted by GatorCane |

Message Replied To ========== 100% correct I'll acknowledge that I've been part of those arguments on this forum. When I (and others) expressed joy over the successes of our gymnastics team, our softball team, our women's tennis team, etc., we were reminded by some that those successes paled in comparison to the need for success in football/basketball. That those sports mattered more because they made money. People did indeed argue that dropping some of them would be worth it if we could buy more success in football/basketball (via facilities, dorms, coaching staffs, etc.). Not many, but some. The baseball championship was exciting, but also eye opening. Some of the same people who dismisses the sports mentioned above because they don't make money were excited about baseball, which also loses money. That is when it occurred to me, it isn't about money to those suggesting we focus on football/basketball even more at the expense of other sports, it is that those sports are played by women, and they see no value in women's athletics. That to me is even more shameful. ============================== Hope that got your attention.
The upcoming budget for all sports includes $82.5 Million for football, $13.5M for basketball. That's $95.7 Million for those 2.
ALL OTHER SPORTS COMBINED? $3.19 million. 3% of the big 2!
The overall budget for sports is $122M
UF is mostly "self sustaining " in sports, unlike others in the state: http://projects.huffingtonpost.com/projects/ncaa/subsidy-scorecards/university-of-florida
There has never been an issue in recent memory about sufficient revenue for football. HOW they spend the money and IF they spend the money sure. Foley and company (UF Pres) philosphically may have parted ways with fans on the $$ spent, but it is THE HEIGHT OF SILLINESS to suggest that UF was ever in a spot where it had to decide to spend money for another sport AT THE EXPENSE OF FOOTBALL. Now, before 1980 I can't tell you.
Think about this: The Lacrosse Stadium cost $15 MILLION. All of that money was private donors. Not one cent from UF!
If UF decided today to zero fund any sport at all, some of you have no idea what would happen do you? That sport would not GO AWAY. Jeez. Alums and supporters IMO would 100% fund that sport the very next day. The next day.
Of course Football is king. Always will be. It's 2017 however, not 1965. Before 1968
I suppose it's an interesting argument or discussion to have on a hypothetical level. Some universities may actually be having that discussion right now today in some small town college city's conference room. NOT THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA however. How lucky are we?
Stanford zero financed fencing. They still fielded a team. U of Cincinnati reduced T and F schollies. Kids till ran.
ELIMINATING a sport? UF will never have to ask that question because if so private money will prop it up. What is funny to me is that those discussing cutting a sport have no earthly idea how much cross country (for example) costs" UF
