Message Replied To ========== Those examples aren't extreme at all. * ============================== The difference between a 5 star and some 3 stars is often 2/10 of a second in the 40, an inch or 2 in height, and about 20 pounds (not 100). Where the analysis often falls short is method of timing speed, genetic make up (probability of future growth) and heart. We were always clocked in full pads, on natural turf, with cleats. Wet that field, and we lost 3/10 of a second. Many other schools let players run in shorts, on a track. The muscle difference between running in pads and taking a hit is not easily quantified. The difference in a 40 yard sprint does not always relate. The ability to change direction is only measured in the shuttle. Do you think that is scientific? You see a damn line and know you are being clocked on how fast you turn on it like it's a race... now apply that to game situation. Not the same. Calculate that for me. I dropped my speed in the 40 by 3/10 of a second between the ages of 18 and 21. I saw many others do the same, while 5 star studs stopped developing (speed). Many of these guys are ranked that high by sophomore year. While others were still sprouting up. Jeff Driskel was probably the closest match to your 5 star description, but he never benched 300. Still, he was the highest rated qb ever by ESPN. I've not seen a 5'6" qb ranked 4 stars in quite a while. I don't think anyone is arguing that a 5 star ranking is a safer bet, but you have to realize there are 20 guys or more, who end up being just as good, for every 5 star guy. The challenge is finding these other guys with limited information. The next is developing them... all of them. Pumping your chest about star rankings is great but you keep making it out that it is the end all, be all. Bama has far more can't miss athletes assembled than any other team in the history of rankings... by the numbers, nobody else should be close in the championship games. But here we are. (Yea, I'm envious if what they get signed) I maintain that our staff is doing a good job and I believe they have better evaluation methods than rivals, 247, scout and you. |
