...in the shoes of someone who wasn't born as fortunate, and faces harrassment by hate groups, I think I would want to know someone would stand with me. I feel it a moral obligation to stand with that person even if it does give the hate group more attention. 

I happened to have been born a Jewish white male, and while I don't believe I have ever felt particularly persecuted, I have quite often felt varying degrees of dislike, disdain and have seen many times extreme ignorance, prejudice, judgmentalism, and even poorly conveyed curiosity.

Judiasm is for me more of a heritage than it is a religion.  But it's a heritage that carries with it a history of persecution...and for that reason I identify with those who choose to stand up for minorities more than I might if it wasn't the case for me.

Here's a quick story I have never shared here.

When I was 12 years old, I played Pop Warner football.  My team went through a season where we were not only undefeated, we were un-scored upon.  We were invited to go to New Orleans to play against an all-star team in a game that was to be televised.  They put us up in the homes of rival players.  So here I am, a 12 year old with no real comparable experience.  We (myself and a teammate) were in the living room of the family we were assigned to.  The mom and dad were sitting on the sofa opposite us, when the dad says "So what religions are you boys"?

My teammate said he is a Lutheran, and I said I am Jewish (I honestly didn't know at that point that there were people who wouldn't like me based on religion).  "You're a Jew?"  He asked.  "Yessir."

I remember clear as day he looked at his wife and stood up and walked away.  She (bless her heart) said something like "If I'd have known I would have bought some of them kosher pickles."

The dad didn't say another word to me, except I do remember after we beat them 14-0 and were in the tailgate lot, he said to his friend "I got a Luth and a Jew staying with me, what do you have"?
