"Er, are you intimating that those with decreasing levels of interest/fanaticism are "fair-weather" "

In All Kinds Of Weather. Go Gators. *

type fans, or are you just kinda sayin that you're always all in for the Gators, your own self?

Because, in all honesty, as someone who is just not as taken in with all of it as i used to be, i do sometimes wonder if the "fair weather fan" thing applies in any way to me.

I mean, along the same timeline in which we have all gotten older and hopefully matured and often moved on to other things, as commercialism and "NFL-izing" of the game have run rampant, as mounting catastrophic injuries have decreased the viewing enjoyment, as ticket prices/levels have gotten even further out of control, as social media and the "student-athletes'" unfortunate tendency to use it leave many of us bemused at what exactly is going on on college campuses, as tv viewing, though larger-screened and higher-resolutioned than ever before, is so rife with crass commercialism and inane commentary as to be almost unwatchable, as coaches have been exposed to be less maturity/team-building mentors and more dollar-driven mercenary opportunists, as the collective focus has completely shifted from enjoying the experience and spectacle and hopefully winning more than we lose and if possible maybe a championship here and there to an ESPN/CFP-driven landscape where only 4 teams matter, as recruiting has gone from a fun offseason pastime that allowed you to remain connected to your beloved program to a potentially creepy 365-day peering in to the lives of teenage boys, as off-field, often criminal, exploits and legal entanglements continue to dominate actual games in the media's eye..........well as all of this other stuff has been unfolding, the Gator football fortunes have gone from being regionally competitive to nationally competitive to nationally dominant/championship level, to......whatever it is we have now.

And please, CINN, i hope the header didn't come across as finger-pointing at you. Because, even given all of the other stuff i mentioned above - and that run-on paragraph was at best an incomplete list - which has come to take over the great sport i grew up watching in the 1970s, when you consider that once UF got good we got really good, and until just the last few (sh!tty) years, UF football was right there in the top 3 for sustained decades-long success....well, i have to admit that however the product is packaged, marketed and presented, and however much the package may occasionally stink......losing still isn't as much fun as winning. Ever.

And so i wonder, myself.  And i try to be honest, because that whole paragraph/list are obviously things that matter at least a little to me, but, well, would i be just as rabid now as i used to be, if it was UF and not Bama and OSU and FSU et al doing all the winning?

I don't know.  I really and truly don't think so.....but i can't tell you for sure.  It's almost certainly a part of things as i view them, but right now i'm just thinking it's a small part.  Maybe we'll start kicking ass again that will change.
