"all the top 25-30 programs are competing for the top 1000 kids...really the top 500 or so"

Message Replied To ==========

I don't get it. Were you under the impression that the 18-22 year olds recruited by the U of F

don't screw up, don't do bad things, and always represent their school well? As a college football fan were you assuming all the dumbasses sign at other schools? College kids are human; some make really stupid decisions. As fans, we can root for them all to make us proud, but it doesn't always happen. Doesn't change how I feel about the game or the school I support.==============================

of those, I would bet 70% come from disadvantaged backgrounds ie poor, broken homes, single parent families, lots of crime in the area, etc etc.  Add in the fact that they are teenage boys.  Aside from truly bad apples, you are going to get plenty of them doing stupid stuff.  Hell, that's common for teenage boys fortunate enough to come from stable/prosperous households.  It is just the luck of the draw whether or not your program got more or less from those top 500 or top 1000 each year who are going to be knuckleheads or not.

How the school handles things is a fair point to judge them on.  Do they suspend immediately or do they try to sweep it under the rug?  Do they tolerate guys who are not merely dumb but who are actual thugs in order to win football games?  I feel very good about how UF handles such things.  I'm inclined to be understanding so long as they do not harm others - and in this case they have not.

“Every man should endeavor to understand the meaning of subjugation before it is too late… It means the history of this heroic struggle will be written by the enemy; that our youth will be trained by Northern schoolteachers; will learn from Northern school books their version of the war; will be impressed by the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors, and our maimed veterans as fit objects for derision… It is said slavery is all we are fighting for, and if we give it up we give up all. Even if this were true, which we deny, slavery is not all our enemies are fighting for. It is merely the pretense to establish sectional superiority and a more centralized form of government, and to deprive us of our rights and liberties.”  Maj. General Patrick R. Cleburne, CSA, January 1864

"I yet believe that the maintenance of the rights and authority reserved to the states and to the people, not only essential to the adjustment and balance of the general system, but the safeguard to the continuance of a free government. I consider it as the chief source of stability to our political system, whereas the consolidation of the states into one vast republic, sure to be aggressive abroad and despotic at home, will be the certain precursor of that ruin which has overwhelmed all those that have preceded it." Robert E. Lee
