When you're program is under constant scrutiny for a lack of offense why would any rational person think not scoring would be the right thing to do unless you're shaving points? Yes, from a PR point of view taking a knee with that much time, and only a 7 point lead, would be beyond stupid. 

I've been withholding judgment about this coaching staff, trying to be patient and fair.  While I readily acknowledge and appreciate that they deserve respect for capturing two SEC East titles -- I hesitate to say they "won" those championships, given the quality of competition and sometimes quirky nature of the way the two seasons evolved -- I can't help feeling somewhat dissatisfied with the progress of the team and uncertain about the direction of the program.  This far into a third season under Mac's leadership, I'd hoped to see (a) more progress towards consistency in play-calling and execution, on both sides of the ball; (b) fewer penalties resulting from lack of discipline and lapses of alertness (both on the field and on the sideline), a significant amount of which I believe must be attributed to insufficient or ineffective coaching; and (c) greater emergence of a perceptible identity that can unify and motivate current players, attract talented recruits, and inspire the fans.  Right now, it just seems to me that the coaches are more or less making it up as they go along, and even when the Gators emerge victorious, there's not the same level of fun and passion and sheer ebullience about the game. 

Maybe it's just me, and the lingering malaise left by the Muschamp years.  But I sense that other Gator fans are also eager for the old fires to be reignited, and hopeful that the current staff can bring back the enthusiasm that we all experienced -- and that our players seemed to share -- during the halcyon days of Spurrier and Meyer. 

Unfortunately, I think Coach Mac's postgame comment, to the effect that he thought Davis should have gone down voluntarily rather than take the ball to the house on that last breakaway, has the opposite effect.  I can't conceive of Coach Spurrier or Coach Meyer ever suggesting that a player should relinquish a clear, unimpeded opportunity to make a big play and score a touchdown -- particularly late in the game when a score of any kind would likely seal the outcome, and the team is struggling to generate some positive offensive energy -- in favor of dropping to the ground to facilitate running out the clock.  Elevating a conservative game management strategy over going for the big play is not, in my judgment, an approach that is likely to make the game fun for the players and the fans.  To me, it sounds downright Muschampish.  And that's not what this Gator fan wants to hear from the head coach.
