You and I are highly unlikely to ever need food stamps.

Would it make sense to make the less economically viable population pay higher taxes to cover their increased need?

IMO, our flaw is the unwillingness to recognize when the market does not actually yield the best results.

if we gave people money (food stamps) to buy insurance on the open market (the grocery store) it would be better. For your analogy to hold, it would be like this. You would tell people they could not buy ground chuck but only steaks and lobster with their food stamps. And then you would place lots of regulation on grocery stores so that the Mom and Pop stores went out of biz and all the butchers and cashiers had to move to really big grocery stores in big cities. And then because you demand they buy expensive steaks and lobster, and that competition is less . . . things get more expensive so you demand that everyone has to pay more for their food as well.
