"I have no disdain for McElwain, but I admit to being wrong and to giving him too much credit" |
|
I recall watching one of those alternate ESPN channels during the NC game following his first season here. It was one where they had a panel of college coaches breaking down the game play by play. I forget who else was on the broadcast, but what really struck me was that all of the coaches seemed to defer to Mac as the most knowledgable offensive mind in the room. I saw that respect and it convinced me we had a top level offensive coach. I suppose I based a lot of my faith in him on that perception. I was able to rationalize the lack of progress on the offensive side of the ball last season by the loss of Grier and a shoddy OL. We came into this year with lots of promise and high hopes for Feliepe. I did think before the season that LDR might have given us our best chance at success (we debated that heavily here), but I trusted Mac's decision. My sunshine pumper persona kept me believing Franks would improve and develop with playing time, and I believed Mac was sharp enough to create game plans to help the kid out. So I admit to being totally wrong. We saw no improvement, no (apparent) changes, no creativity. No nothing. To the contrary, and being totally honest, we saw a coach with poor management skills, poor clock management, and no sense that any of it was improving. The poor coaching and play on the field only exacerbated the personality stuff...which became more and more grating as time when on. Before the A&M game, I was firmly in the one more year camp. After the deja vu of that game, followed by the death threat nonsense and the realization that there were likely other personality issues at play behind the scenes...he lost me (as I assume he did many others). The uga disaster left me feeling completey done. So to all of you who saw the end before I did....you were right, and I was wrong. I will never be one of those guys that jumps the gun on these kinds of situations, but I can admit that you guys were right. |
