I have taught graduate courses in public administration for 15 years at a state university. Growing up in Florida, I knew Uncle Remus references since childhood. Early in my teaching career, I occasionally used the metaphor "Tar Baby" in reference to controversial issues from which public officials avoided entanglement.

A few years later, I noticed my black students reacted oddly to the term and asked why. They told me Tar Baby in their culture referred to a very dark complected child in a derogatory manner. I ceased using the term in its traditional context, and have since used that experience to explain to students how racial and other bigotry can be perceived when prejudice was never remotely intended.

Could one of my former students accuse me of racism publicly now? Probably, but not accurately.

Most public figures accused recently of sexual harassment and other vile behavior are probably degenerates. But I fear the trend of decades old accusations will cascade, and actions by many that were innocent when engaged will be judged as sexist or racist now. Or worse.
