The left is fixated on it because they mistakenly believe single payer brings about more equality and efficiency in healthcare. It does not. It only increases bureaucratic inefficiency and it increases in inequality by raising the bar on who can afford the best healthcare. In our preACA system, the vast majority of Americans had access to the very best healthcare in the world. Post ACA, a few more have some access to healthcare but only a plurality have access to the very best. Under single payer, the vast majority have access to mediocre healthcare but the elite still get the very best. There are hybrids that could assure all can get the best but it would take less government heavyhandedness and more competition than what we have had since 1964.
