"One thing I heard, one thing I saw today..."

Edited by Author at 11/25/2017 - 7:14 p.m.

The people I sit with may be FOS -- but it's likely they have some clue.

1. UF admins believed the "fit" with Kelly wasn't good after meeting with them.  We'll never know if this is spin, truth, or a combination -- but it makes some sense.  Kelly would want the admin to follow his lead -- and that left him with a show cause (for whatever reason) from his last stop.  Obviously, UF does some things differently.

Also, the fact Kelly already knows how to recruit the LA area probably influenced his decision.  UCLA is a lesser job, but it's possible Kelly is self-aware enough to understand where he might have more success.

My point is that both Kelly and UF seemed to figure out he might be a better fit out west.

2. I know this season is over, but I tried to watch the offense more closely today.  My summary observation is Nuss simply doesn't know how to build an offense that will be successful at this level.  Sure -- I am Captain Obvious! Let me explain with a couple of examples.  On one play, a misdirected sweep to the left, it was a GREAT play call.  f$u was fooled (as a team like that would be fooled).  However, the play depended on our #10 to successfully block their #90.  Anyone who knows football understands that, at the more elite levels, you should NEVER depend on a #10 defeating a #90.  In smaller-school football, #10 might be able to screen #90 -- but not here.  Big loss, and the play was doomed from the start.

On another play, Franks had our WR racing on a post from the left, and our WR had a step.  Unfortuantely, we didn't have anyone running a pattern to occupy the other safety.  The strong safety reverses field.  When Franks hangs it up to let our WR run under the pass, the fsu safety who should have been on the other sideline raced back to the middle of the field to disrupt the pass.  It was an explosive play that almost became a pick instead.

..and has Nuss ever heard of a screen pass?  fsu tipped every blitz, but we never countered.

It isn't just the play calls.  It isn't the fact we don't have the athletes (though we are depleted).  The issue is our OC doesn't seem to know how to design mis-matches (or avoid bad ones for us) while calling plays.  Yes, we seem to be predictable -- but what I sw today is that even when we catch the opponent off guard, there is still a fundamental flaw in the play design / route combination concept.  It is almost stupid -- seriously, if I can see this, won't any competent DC for our opponents?

Let's hope I am more excited after we hire a coach.  There is some talent in the program -- it's a nice place to begin building.

PPS I agree with Hung that Foley blew it.  I have a daughter headed to UF to play a non-revenue sport, but even people like me understand you have to take care of the golden goose.  We need MBAs and not publicists who hang around running this athletic department.  Glad we had him, and now I am glad he's gone.
