Friday was one of the most embarrassing days for the U.S. media in quite a long time. The humiliation orgy was kicked off by CNN, with MSNBC and CBS close behind, with countless pundits, commentators and operatives joining the party throughout the day. By the end of the day, it was clear that several of the nation's largest and most influential news outlets had spread an explosive but completely false news story to millions of people, while refusing to provide any explanation of how it happened.

The spectacle began on Friday morning at 11:00 am EST, when the Most Trusted Name in News™ spent 12 straight minutes on air flamboyantly hyping an exclusive bombshell report that seemed to prove that WikiLeaks, last September, had secretly offered the Trump campaign, even Donald Trump himself, special access to the DNC emails before they were published on the internet. As CNN sees the world, this would prove collusion between the Trump family and WikiLeaks and, more importantly, between Trump and Russia, since the U.S. intelligence community regards WikiLeaks as an "arm of Russian intelligence," and therefore, so does the U.S. media.

He is living in a glass house of his own. And I think he did write it, because he again references "the U.S. media" further down in the article.

And even if he didn't write the headline, there is no shortage of hyperbole.

"Spectacle".

"Humiliation orgy."

It is not the entire "U.S. Media" that is at fault here. What do CNN, MSNBC, and CBS all have in common?

Television.

He never notes that distinction, hiding behind "major media outlets."

With a few exceptions, TV "news" is not known for breaking major news, and certainly not doing so accurately. The rush to be first overtook the desire to be correct a long time ago. People like Dilanian spend so much time on TV that they don't have time (or apparently the inclination) to do rigorous fact-checking. Greenwald is correct to call them out, but incorrect to paint with such a broad brush over all media.

I do give credit to Glenn for finally (albeit briefly) mentioning the WaPo's role in correcting the error (print media) all the way down in paragraph 5.

I find it interesting though that he leaves out Fox News (aka state-run media) in his deep concern about rapid dissemination of false information. I wonder why that is?

I've said this before and I'm going to say this again: Glenn has a knack for including information which supports his arguments and theories, and leaving out that which doesn't.

Sort of like the same thing he's (CORRECTLY) pointing out that CNN, MSNBC, and CBS all had in common in this instance.
