Mac had 2 years to get this mess cleared.  He didn't.  It got worse.

because it was so bad when he took over. This is not an endorsement of Mac because he didn't improve the roster by enough and he didn't get it in recruiting until year three.  

He won the East but the division was hot garbage. UF wasn't even a very good team. The best you can say is that he did a good job coaching to win games, and UF had to cover for a lot of defeciencies to win those games.

It was the same old story this season, UF had roster issues made worse by suspensions (and injuries). Mac again coached to win and a play here or there and he could have been 5-1 (or 1-5). Not good enough really as the expectations here are more than just game planning to hopefully eeke out a win. 

Without opening his big mouth he would still be the coach (if he even wanted to stay). Would he fix the flaws? I would guess no (Nuss, S&C, attention to detail, player accountability). Eventually there would have been a showdown with Stricklin, and a prove it season (i.e. win something other than a division). His dismissal just moved up the timeline.

Mac has neither the worst nor the coach to turn it around. He was a mediocre D1 coach still figuring things out like 100 of the 130 guys with similar jobs. With a beneviolent AD he might have had a year where he won big and a year where he lost, but mostly a lot of years like what we saw already.
