"That is a good point except"

Message Replied To ==========

If Republicans would stop proclaiming there is nothing they can do and start speaking out

and that includes regular people, maybe somethi could happen.

==============================

We already established what the Republicans are and that what you propose won’t happen. The Republicans are a fractured party: they are now three and a half parties: traditional Republicans who remain in Congress, Trumpians that control the WH, Tea Party members that still remain mostly in the house, and a handful of libertarians. Trump has effectively destroyed the Republican party. It no longer exists as a functionable entity...and may not recover from his Presidency.

Rank and file Republicans stand to lose regardless of how this turns iut. If they decide not to acquiesce to Trumps demands, their only option would be to try to pass a veto proof bill. That puts a lot of political risk for those who support it.

Take Rubio for example. Rubio is very likely to vote in favor of a clean DACA bill. But doing so still would not win him the votes of most of those to whom this issue matters. It risks losing the votes of a sizeable portion of his base. Rubio would vote for it but it could cost him his seat.

Sadly, I think the Democratic leadership sees that and believes taking advantage of it to win seats is more important than the fate of the immigrants. The only thing they lose by acquiescing (to what I agree is an unreasonable demand by Trump ) is the opportunity to place those like Rubio on the hot seat...and to give Trump a “win”.

Meanwhile, the immigrants get screwed. “The Resistance” matters more than the immigrants do.

Those whining about not being able to deal with Trump obviously must not do much business. Those you can deal with by only a handshake are few and far between...one must approach all deals as if the other side is going to push for the best deal for themselves. That is why contracts are written in ink. It is why we have so many lawyers. That is the world Donald J Trump comes from, and he has been well known to be one of the most obnoxious examples of that kind of dealing. In this case, he has a monopoly, there is not another US President Congress could turn to. Trump does not care about the immigrants, and he does not care about the Reoublican party. He has the upper hand. As I said here many times before, I would love to see him impeached. But it does not look like that will happen.
