The Constitution checked powers to preclude tyrants from governing the nation. The Second Amendment was a manifestion of that fear of tyranny. Our culture is different from all others in that respect. The NRA was founded in New York City nearly 150 years ago, but the value of gun ownership existed long before that. We fought a Civil War, yet the Second Amendment was not repealed. I don’t know how to stop gun violence, but asserting the United States should mimic other countries by limiting citizen ownership of firearms or blaming the NRA are fantasy. Those arguments ignore our cultural history and the majority sentiments of the electorate. |
