I do not want our schools to take dramatic measures to make them “safer”.  

Not to be callous, but there are 50 million kids in almost a hundred thousand public elementary and secondary public schools. The deaths we see are tragic but they are not indicative of a danger to our children remotely as high as many other risks we take for granted.  Just as I don’t want to live in a neighborhood where people put bars on their windows, I don’t want my kids having to walk through metal detectors for the rest of their academic time in order to give the illusion of security.

And “teacher is packing heat because we never know when someone is going to try to kill us all” is not the outlook on life I want to see fostered.

Just my two cents from a parent who (along with Mrs. Voljean) refused to teach our children “stranger danger”.
