China is our global regional rival but not our enemy. We will always be in trade negotiations with them over something. We will always think they are "cheating" and they will always fear we will send gunships to open up their markets to our advantage (or encourage their people to use Opium etc). Hardliner rhetoric is not the best way to deal with our national rivalries with Asian countries because it misses the cultural and historical nuances between us IMHO. In the end though, we have more in common with China than we do apart and co-operation between us can benefit both nations tremendously.
