TFW a conservative writer is excited by citizen participation and a progressive wave/future

Finally, this outpouring of activism is happening just as the largest, most diverse generation ever — millennials — reaches political maturity. They were already more progressive than older generations, and their political upbringing in an intensely anti-Trump atmosphere might affect their political behavior and preferences for decades to come. Certainly, for teens who have been able to rouse the nation and shift attitudes about guns, political activism might become a central feature of their lives and define their politics long after Trump has left office.

This wave of participatory democracy is the gorgeous silver lining in the dark clouds of the Trump era. Americans are thinking seriously about democracy, striving to bolster the political norms that Trump is tearing down and connecting with their fellow citizens in ways they have never done before. America’s democracy has a pulse, and through exercise it’s becoming stronger.

Of course, there are a lot of things these young activists want that I can't sign off on, but I'm hopeful that with seasoning they come around on some of the things we disagree, and I may eventually come around on some others. While this writer props these kids up as defenders of democracy, some of the things they actually promote are very anti-democratic notions. But that's in the details. Overall, an educated, motivated electorate is good for democracy.
