Trump was certainly "vetted" in the court of public opinion. But it wasn't fully informed vetting, which gets to your point. 

Not much if any traditional vetting was done on Trump. I doubt his primary opponents even did that much oppo-vetting given than nobody thought he was going to get the nomination until it was too late to stop it.

We need to fix this legislatively going forward. Nobody should be allowed to run for POTUS without requiring full financial disclosure, and divestment of assets into a blind trust. That's would cause some people to disqualify themselves from running, but so be it. The temptation to feather one's own nest is simply too great otherwise.
