The population for comparison is not race per se, but race of those committing and/or convicted of murder. The nature of interracial offenses also matters. Blacks kill other blacks in manners that do not meet death penalty criteria. Whites rarely murder blacks comparatively. When blacks kill other races, the crimes “disproportionately“ include aggravating circumstances under death penalty statutes. Anecdote, of my four mentioned above, two were white, one was Asian, and the one actually executed was black.
