I can’t believe Heggie is not one of our best 3 on the interior. I know he’s been dinged but what we have there is not cutting it. It might be time to give Bleich a shot too. It’s better to suck with a freshman starting than to suck with seniors starting. At TE, Gamble has shown some chops blocking. I’m not sure what to think of Krull yet. Stephens and Raymond are very limited as players and should see less Playing Time IMO. Cyontai Lewis still can’t catch. Ergo, let’s see more of Gamble and Krull. At RB so far Scarlett has been OK but Perine and Davis before his injury looked clearly better. Pierce needs more touches - and not in garbage time. Davis may redshirt. If Scarlett doesn’t show out this week, I’d go ahead and start Perine and I REALLY want to see more of Pierce. At WR, Jefferson should get more snaps and should be targeted more. Not sure why we don’t see more of Grimes but that backshoulder pass Cyontai dropped in the endzone is a prime example of a pass that should go to Grimes or Cleveland with their size. Swain and Hammond are good receivers too - not stars but good solid players who are light years better than the kind of crap we’ve had at WR for the last 10 years. I still need to see evidence that Cleveland has been developed into more than a deep threat. Speaking of which, he should be targeted deep at least once or twice per week. That brings us to Toney. More touches please. Wildca, bubble screens, little dump offs in the flats, reverses, I want 7-10 touches for him per week. He makes things happen. At DB, is Trey Dean really a Corner and not a safety? He looks a little rough at corner. try him out at Safety please. I like Edwards at Corner. Consider starting Edwards there. Chauncey could also play corner if necessary. We need CJ McWilliams and Sean Davis to get healthy. At LB Kylan Johnson started and played pretty well. Joseph looked a little more under control though I’m still concerned about his lack of instincts. I still don’t trust Rayshad Jackson’s tackling. We need David Reese to get back healthy though I do like what I’m seeing from James Houston so far. He brings it - knocks guys back, causes fumbles, etc. I need to see more of Ventrel Miller before I can judge. Ar DL Zuniga and Polite contained this week after a miserable performance last week. It would be nice if Zuniga would bring that pass rush against SEC opponents instead of just scrub teams. At Tackle, Campbell started over Conliffe and looked OK. Our tackles don’t give us much of a push but don’t get blown up either. We have pretty good depth at this spot, we just don’t have a difference maker. Coaches....I’m not going to complain too much that they’re playing a lot of guys as they figure out what they’ve got. I expect some guy’s playing time will be cut and others expanded as they figure it out. I also expect to see fewer examples of guys like Lewis being asked to do things he doesn’t do well - like catch the ball.

They called those who were making this claim "demagogues." Cooper notes that when two Northerners visited Jefferson Davis during the war, Davis insisted "the Confederates were not battling for slavery" and that "slavery had never been the key issue" (Jefferson Davis, American, p. 524). Precious few textbooks mention the fact that by 1864 key Confederate leaders, including Jefferson Davis, were prepared to abolish slavery. As early as 1862 some Confederate leaders supported various forms of emancipation. In 1864 Jefferson Davis officially recommended that slaves who performed faithful service in non-combat positions in the Confederate army should be freed. Robert E. Lee and many other Confederate generals favored emancipating slaves who served in the Confederate army. In fact, Lee had long favored the abolition of slavery and had called the institution a "moral and political evil" years before the war (Recollections and Letters of Robert E. Lee, New York: Barnes and Noble Books, 2003, reprint, pp. 231-232). By late 1864, Davis was prepared to abolish slavery in order to gain European diplomatic recognition and thus save the Confederacy. Duncan Kenner, one of the biggest slaveholders in the South and the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee of the Confederate House of Representatives, strongly supported this proposal. So did the Confederate Secretary of State, Judah Benjamin. Davis informed congressional leaders of his intentions, and then sent Kenner to Europe to make the proposal. Davis even made Kenner a minister plenipotentiary so as to ensure he could make the proposal to the British and French governments and that it would be taken seriously. |
